Random number between 1 and 960, page 840 of 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die by Peter Boxall, general editor, published by Cassell Illustrated in Great Britain, has a full page photo of Haruki Murakami to accompany an article on The Wind-up Bird Chronicle, which according to its contributor, Tom Jones of the London Review of Books, is the author's "heftiest novel." The original Japanese novel was released in three parts.

The caption reads: "Murakami's Japan is the everyday contemporary urban world, but strangely penetrated by mysteries and historical reflections." The Wind-up Bird Chronicle is narrated in the first person, the male of a couple, who was recently unemployed, and who one day was tasked to look for their missing cat. Then things got stranger and stranger. Somewhere along the story, he learned of an old soldier's experiences in the Kwantung Army.
